What's in the case this week

Everything is baked here, in small batches, before the doors open. A few favorites people come back for:

Egg & cheese croissant

A deeply browned, flaky croissant split and griddled around a fried egg and melting cheese. Our most-grabbed breakfast on the way to work.

Cheese & fruit danishes

Cream-cheese danish, strawberry-jam tart, and a pineapple danish finished with a sweet drizzle. Soft centers, crisp laminated edges.

Frosted cupcakes

Carrot cake under a swirl of cream-cheese frosting with a little marzipan carrot on top. Whatever the day's flavor is, it goes fast.

Apple crumb bars

Buttery shortbread base, spiced apple, and a thick oat-crumble lid baked golden. The kind of thing that disappears with a coffee.

Cream puffs & cheesecakes

Pâte à choux puffs dusted with powdered sugar, and a mini strawberry-topped cheesecake when you want something cool and rich.

The Baker's Bench is a small Westbrook bakery on Brackett Street — display cases, tile floor, and the smell of butter and sugar by 7 a.m.

The work starts in the dark: laminating dough for croissants, proofing danish trays, frosting cupcakes by hand. By the time the lights come on at the front, the racks behind the counter are full and the case is loaded.

We keep it honest and we keep it local — fresh batches over big batches, real butter over shortcuts, and a counter where the person handing you the box probably pulled it from the oven. Stop in Tuesday through Saturday and grab something while it's still warm.
